Kansas City Subaru Challenge - July 11, 2004
Steve Sulatycki, driving the Zzyzx Motorsports Impreza 2.5 RS took top honors at the Kansas City Subaru Challenge
which included the class win in Street Modified, top spot in the Super Star Challenge and Fastest Time of Day (FTD)
overall. His co-driver and Event Chair, Steve Eberlein, took 2nd in Street Modified and 3rd in the Super Star Challenge.
As the two and only DSP entrants, they were bumped to Street Modified per SCCA Solo II rules. Steve Sulatycki was the
only entrant to break the 60 second barrier with a 59.714 clean on his last run of the day. The run before was a
59.659, but he tagged one of the last cones on course just before the finish. The results are posted on the Kansas City
Region's website here.
The real challenge was getting the car sorted. With newly re-valved Koni shocks and a switch to the rather enormous
275/45-16 Hoosier A3S03s, the handling needed some adjustments. Thankfully, the work prior to the event adjusting ride
height and ensuring proper clearance for the tires did the trick on that front as there were no issues with rubbing
at all. Shock damping turned out to be the only issue that needed attention. On one run, near the top of the course, Steve Sulatycki hit
an undulation just prior to a sharp right-hander and sent the car on a pogo-stick like bounce where the car got air
about four times bouncing sideways. After the adjustments the bounce issue was mostly resolved and the times reflected
this.
Thankfully we had Peat Romano our resident photographer there to get action shots. Peaty is well known in the Subaru
community for his PeatPics and many write-ups and HOWTOs on ScoobyMods. He has
an album prepared of the entire event and
caught the following action shots:

Note here how much darker the front wheels are. We got spoiled running flat black Rotas for a whole season and now just
one event and the front wheels are black from brake dust. These Kosei K-1s sure are nice looking when they're clean,
though! And yep, we couldn't find our DSP magnets (they're around here somewhere...) in time for the event so the
autocrossers were scratching their heads at the ITE class letters.
